What is Mechatronics?

 

Mechatronics Engineering is an approach aiming at the synergistic integration of precise mechanics, electronics, control theory, and computer science within product design and manufacturing, in order to improve and optimize its functionality. The word ‘Mechatronics’ was invented by the Japanese engineer Ko Kikuchi in 1969. It is a combination of the terms 'mechanical' ("mecha" for mechanisms) and 'electronics'. Unlike traditional engineering where designs are finalized by iterations of design equations and numerical analysis, mechatronic systems are accurately designed using modeling and simulations, prototyping and hence properly tested by deploying. It relates to the design of systems, devices and products intended to achieving an optimal balance between basic mechanical structure and its overall control. The design of the mechanical system is performed together with the electrical, electronic and computer control features that will comprise a complete ‘Modern Mechanical System.’

Mechatronics engineering is one of the latest branches of engineering and has far-reaching applications to every sector of society. Mechatronics engineers integrate precision mechanical engineering with electronics, computer systems, and advanced control to design and construct products and processes. They play a vital role in machine vision, automation, sensing and control systems, medical mechatronics, medical imaging system, structural dynamic system, artificial intelligence, avionics, embedded and real-time systems and so on. Mechatronic engineers can work in almost all aspects of the development, such as robotics, medical and assistive technology, human-machine interaction, manufacturing, unmanned aerial and ground vehicles, education etc.

Department of Mechatronics Engineering, RUET provide an appropriate learning environment and techniques to its students, so that they will have an enriched intellectual, creative thinking and practical knowledge for solving challenging engineering problems. This department possesses brilliant faculty members and a number of laboratories including a Control and Artificial Intelligence Lab updated with latest technologies. This laboratory has been formed under a project of Bangladesh High Tech Park Authority, ICT Division, Bangladesh. Graduates from this department have the knowledge and skill to develop new solutions to industrial problems using mechanical and electronic processes and computer technology, to design and build completely new products by integrating various technologies and to build and test factory production lines introducing automation to improve existing processes. Mechatronic engineers are employed by product developers and manufacturers, the mining industry, the aerospace and defence sectors, self-owned companies and by government and industry research groups all around the world. In Bangladesh, many automation companies like pharmaceuticals, textiles, ceramics, aviation, media, finance, real estate, construction as well as power plants provide the job facilities to mechatronics engineers. Our graduates are in a great demand wherever there is potential for improvement in the integration of computer and electrical hardware with mechanical systems.
